Emissions Standards

The European emissions standards are legislation imposed by the European Union / Federal Republic of Germany governing the limits for the pollutants emitted in exhaust gas (sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and, for diesel models, exhaust particulates). Since September 2009, the Euro 5 emissions standard has applied to all new vehicles registered in Europe.
The emissions standard Euro 6 (category N) is due to become law from 2014. Different standards (e.g. BIN/LEV in the USA) apply in other regions of the world.
