Electronic Engine Management

The electronic engine management's principal task is to coordinate all parameters through continuous process control in order to assure economical and ecological engine operation with low emissions.
The electronic engine management governs the engine on the basis of engine speed, engine temperature, fuel grade (determined by a knock sensor) and accelerator pedal position. All input information is processed in the control unit and, based on this, the control signals for the individual assemblies are calculated. 16-bit or 32-bit processors are necessary for processing the vast range of data.

Depending on engine type, it controls such aspects as ignition timing, injection quantity, injection timing, exhaust gas recirculation, throttle position, variable intake manifold position,
variable turbine geometry (with turbocharger) and camshaft adjustment. The details of any deviations from normal operation are stored in the fault memory so the causes can be investigated the next time your car is serviced.
