Head Restraints

The design and positioning of the head restraints is of considerable importance in both rear and frontal impacts (in the whiplash phase) for the effects of the load acting on the occupants in the head and neck region. Only correctly adjusted head restraints can transfer the energy induced in the event of a head impact into the load-bearing structure of the seat in a predefined manner, and thus help to prevent or reduce injuries in the head and cervical spine region.

To reduce the risk of injury in rear-end collisions, VW has in recent years succeeded in developing a complete system that offers excellent protection by means of unequalled coordination of the deceleration of the torso by the backrest, the deceleration of the head by the head restraint and the retention of head and torso by the backrest and the head restraint. The great advantage of this geometrically and dynamically optimised system lies in the fact that a level of protection potential has been achieved that exceeds the biomechanical parameters of many active systems and that is always available to the occupants in any crash situation. This excellent protection potential has already been demonstrated in various vehicle environments and confirmed in tests by several independent testing institutions (ADAC, IIHS, Thatcham). In addition to the coordination of contour and foam densities in the backrest and head restraint in order to reduce relative movements, the contoured design of the backrest in order to enable the greatest possible damping with the most precise possible retention of the body by the vehicle seat, the contours of the head restraint are of particular importance for its protection potential. A specially contoured head restraint design (VW patent pending) is employed in this case. This head restraint design significantly reduces the stresses on the neck by securely holding the head in place.
