The intercooler reduces the thermal load acting on the engine. In the case of the turbocharger the temperature in the charger rises with the compression of the charge air. As heated air takes up more space than cool air, the cylinders fill with less air than the system’s boost pressure prescribes. The risk of knock in petrol or gasoline engines also increases. For this reason, the compressed air is cooled by the engine’s coolant or the outside air. Intercooling also reduces NOx emissions and fuel consumption.
