Oxygen Sensor

Lambda denotes the air-fuel ratio in an internal combustion engine (stoichiometric ratio). The ideal chemical ratio is lambda = 1, when it amounts to 14.7 kg of air to 1 kg of fuel (for petrol).

The oxygen sensor is capable of measuring this ratio. It is responsible for ensuring that a catalytic converter operates correctly.

The sensor sits in the exhaust tract ahead of the catalytic converter and measures the composition of the exhaust gases by means of the residual oxygen content. On the basis of this value, the engine control unit regulates the mixture composition for the injector system.
