"MP3" refers to compressed digital audio data. The MP3 format is a widely used standard for compressing digital audio files. Compared to an audio CD of virtually the same sound quality, MP3 files only occupy around one-tenth of the memory space. "MP3" stands for MPEG 1 Audio Layer 3. MPEG is a method of compressing digital video and audio data developed by "Motion Picture Experts Group".

To play MP3 data, an MP3-compatible playback system is required. Volkswagen’s radio and radio/navigation systems can read and play MP3 files from data CDs.

Using the MEDIA-IN multimedia socket, data carriers such as data sticks can be connected, and the MP3 files which they contain can be played. The same applies to the iPod preparation.
