Park Assist

Park Assist automatically steers the car into parallel and bay parking spaces, and also out of parallel parking spaces. The system assists the driver by automatically carrying out the optimum steering movements in order to reverse-park on the ideal line. The measurement of the parking space, the allocation of the starting position and the steering movements are automatically undertaken by Park Assist – all the driver has to do is operate the accelerator and the brake. This means that the driver retains control of the car at all times.

The driver activates the parking assistant by means of the separate “Park Assist” button in the centre console and then drives along the road at a maximum speed of 40 km/h and at a distance of 0.5 to 1.5 m from the edge of the road. Park Assist scans both the left-hand and right-hand sides of the road, for example in a one-way street, for any parking spaces as it drives past. By activating the indicator, the driver stipulates on which side of the road he wishes to park. When the parking assistant detects a parking space that is at least 1.1 m longer than the car, the message “Parking Space Found” appears on the multifunction display. The driver is then directed into the correct starting position and requested to engage reverse gear. When reverse gear is engaged, the parking assistant is enabled and the automatic steering is activated. The corresponding message on the multifunction display reports “Steering intervention active! Observe surrounding area!” With careful use of the accelerator the car steers into the parking space. The end of the reversing movement is indicated by the acoustic ParkPilot. The driver is invited by means of further images on the display to drive forwards and, if necessary, backwards again. The number of parking moves depends on the length of the parking space. The shorter the parking space, the more parking moves will be necessary. The system detects all types of parking spaces (e.g. on bends, on kerbs or between trees).

Park Assist can be overridden by the driver at any time.
